Legends Of The Dark And The Deep

Written by James Elliott

PREFACE

Few know the dark and dramatic legend upon which 'White Lady In Ruins' is based.

Neither did I.

Paradoxical as it may sound, but read on and I'll explain why.

This much loved 1977 classic is dedicated to a lady called Margaret Pomeroy. I thought it an obscure legend well worth perpetuating. By the time I created 'White Lady In Ruins' I had already created two earlier images, the first by chance, the second partly, but 'White Lady In Ruins' was the first deliberate elegy. The first image created in 1972 was 'The Veiled Silhouette'. It is a haunting picture of a lady standing in a place of great significance, as we shall see.

The second piece 'The Picture For Margaret Pomeroy', was also being created by chance, but I titled it during the shoot, as I became aware of the horrifying legend, from a passer by.

25 years after I created "White Lady In Ruins", I was collating data to write a couple of paragraphs on the piece, when I discovered some astonishing coincidences which made my eyes flash wide in amazement and my blood run cold. I must mention that I am something of a sceptic when it comes to the paranormal. I don't believe in ghosts, superstition, religion, astrology or any other kind of legacy man-made hokum. Although my thinking does not exclude the 'Gods' or the metaphysical. I am in fact a believer, in the most profound and deepest sense of the word, but not in terms of an orthodox religion. But whatever my own beliefs and whatever yours, this is a dark and mysterious tale.......
