El pioneered the concept of painting existing objects to create images balanced beautifully between the figurative and the abstract. He would mix paint and test the colour on the wall before applying it to an object in the image. Various techniques were used to apply the paint including aerospraying for high gloss and stippling with a brush for perfect matt. El used these methods extensively from 1972 to 1987 after which this approach disappears completely. |
